Heartland Acres 2012 Preservation Activities

Heartland Acres Agribition Center is a nonprofit agricultural museum located in Independence, Iowa. The new facility was opened in May 2007 and is celebrating their Five Year anniversary.

Heartland Acres has responsibility for maintaining their facilities and grounds and keeping it in good condition for generations to come. This summer the facility began a 4 day process of cleaning and sealing the wooden shingles on “The Barn” which houses many of the historically significant agricultural items.

Workers applied a clear sealer to the shingles which will help in preserving the authentic construction materials for years to come. The wooden shingles were an original design specification and intended to maintain character and represent similar materials as used in barn construction in the 1800s.

Heartland Acres was able to complete the preservation through recent donations from supporters and through a grant from the local Independence Hotel / Motel tax grant. Preservation of buildings and grounds are part of regular maintenance and are ongoing. The barn siding was painted a traditional barn-red in 2010. “The care and maintenance of our campus is a top priority as a growing tourist destination in Iowa. Future generations will enjoy the campus for years to come.” stated Craig Johnson, Executive Director.

Heartland Acres is committed to preserving and exhibiting displays which continue telling the story of our agricultural heritage.
