Independence McDonalds Restaurant Donates Rush Park Horse Racing Mural to Heartland Acres

Horse racing was big business in Independence, Iowa in the late 1800’s.  The Rush Park Horse Racing Track hosted many races and saw visitors from all over the world.  The horses known as Allerton and Axtell held world acclaim for their speed and strength on the track and were known throughout the world.

Independence was known as “The Lexington of the North” and for good reason.  Horse racing was in its hay day and crowds of people from Chicago as well many other major cities would gather in Independence during the many racing events held on the once famous site now home to businesses and Independence Jr. /Sr. High School.

“Donations such as the items from the Independence McDonalds restaurant are important to Heartland Acres as they help keep the stories alive about our history and the significant impact our ancestors had on our history.” stated Craig Johnson, Executive Director.
